special flood hazard area (SFHA)

an area within a floodplain having a one-percent or greater chance of flood occurrence in any given year. They are represented on Flood Insurance Rate Maps by darkly-shaded areas with zone designations that include the letter “A” or “V.” Also known as a 100-year floodplain.
