dynamite
an explosive material invented by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel in 1866. There are two types: nitroglycerin dynamite and ammonium dynamite. Nitroglycerin dynamite consists of nitroglycerin absorbed by some inert, porous solid, such as sawdust. Over long-term storage, the nitroglycerine sometimes leaks out, making “old dynamite” extremely hazardous. Ammonium dynamite is dynamite in which part of the nitroglycerin is replaced by ammonium nitrate.
